In Under the Soil, I produced 3D-printed skull models based on cetacean, sika deer, and woolly rhinoceros fossils unearthed beneath the area surrounding Shanghai Xintiandi. The surfaces of the models were hand-rendered to simulate traces of sedimentation and fossilization.

The skulls are suspended within a large net structure hung in the atrium of a commercial mall. Each contains an embedded loudspeaker connected to a live sound-capture system. Ambient noise from the site is processed through real-time algorithms and translated into low-frequency sound patterns, approximating the possible acoustic characteristics of extinct animals. In this way, the work allows echoes from geological strata to emerge within the contemporary urban soundscape.
